Sacramental Information

For Children: Baptism is usually celebrated on Sunday at 3:00 pm.  Parents are required to take the Baptism Preparation Course offered usually on the first Saturday of the month September to June. Registration for the class is required; please contact the parish office at 604 434 1328 to book a Baptism Prep Class and the date for the Baptism of your child.  Children over the age of five will need some preparation and will need to be registered in the school or our Parish Religious Education Program (PREP)

Godparents or Sponsors for Baptism must be Catholics who have received the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist and who lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken.

For Adults: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the usual way in which adults become Catholic. The RCIA is a process in which adults learn and experience the Catholic faith.  It takes place over several months. For more information click on Faith Formation.

For children: Grade 7 Children in the Parish Religious Education Program (PREP) and in St. Francis de Sales school are prepared for this sacrament which usually takes place in April or May.  Children must be enrolled in PREP or the School. For information please contact the parish office at 604 434 1328.

For adults: Adults or teens who have not yet completed their Sacramental Initiation join the RCIA (The Rite of Initiation for Christian Adults) which meets Wednesday evenings at 7:00 pm September through May. Please contact the parish office for more information.

All candidates for Confirmation must have a sponsor. The sponsors must be Catholics who have received the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist and who lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken.  They must also fill out a Sponsor form to be signed by their Parish Priest.

First Holy Communion and First Reconciliation:  Preparation for the Sacrament of First Holy Communion and First Reconciliation is included in the religious education programs of our school and PREP Programs. Children usually begin preparing to celebrate First Reconciliation and First Communion in grade 1 and celebrate the sacrament in Grade 2.

Children in Grade 3 and up in both our school and PREP programs, who have not received these sacraments, are prepared to celebrate these Sacraments on Saturday mornings sessions starting in January and ending when we celebrate First Communion in April.

For adults wishing to receive this sacrament, please see information for the Rite of Initiation for Christian Adults or contact the parish office.

Anointing of the Sick

The Anointing of the Sick—formerly known as ‘last rites’—is no longer considered a sacrament only for those at the point of death.  Instead, this healing sacrament is for all those who are facing major surgery, chronic illness, or the weakness that comes with age.  If you have a relative or a friend or you yourself would like to arrange for a priest for Anointing of the Sick please call the parish office.  If you cannot contact us and it is an emergency call for the Chaplains at the following Hospitals:

Burnaby General: Fr. Bede Kim Minh Le - 604-992-9910

Vancouver General: 604-877-5918

St. Paul’s Hospital: 604-252-4224

Royal Columbian: 604-520-4253

Please provide this important information to the priest as the hospital will not provide any details when he arrives:  name of the sick, ward, room number and bed number and name and phone number of the person making the request.
